The approach

More than lap time.

Becoming a better racer isn’t only about going faster.

Performance comes from the combination of riding ability, racecraft, physical preparation, decision-making, confidence, preparation and how you manage yourself away from the circuit.

Troy Herfoss Performance provides individual race mentoring built around the needs of each racer.

Some riders need help finding lap time. Others need structure around their training. Some need an experienced perspective on racing, pressure, teams or the next stage of their career.

The level of support depends on the athlete.

Rider and crew

The gap between rider and crew.

A lot gets lost between what a rider feels on the bike and what the crew hears in the garage. I’ve sat on the rider’s side of that conversation for more than twenty years, and I can help navigate that gap.

For the rider

Understanding what your crew chief is doing and why, so you have confidence in the bike you roll out on.

For the crew

Helping the crew chief understand what the rider’s comments actually mean, so the changes go in the right place.

A comment every crew chief has heard

“It won’t turn.”

That needs more explanation. Is it turn entry, mid-corner or exit? Often the bike isn’t turning for other reasons, so I go through every aspect of it. Chasing only the turning can upset other areas.

Who it’s for

From developing racers to professionals.

Developing racers

For young racers on a pathway to national competition. Building the fundamentals of riding, training, racecraft and preparation correctly from the beginning.

National-level racers

Finding consistency, improving race execution and building the physical and mental structure required to compete at a higher level.

Professional riders

An experienced person in your corner to help analyse performance, manage preparation and work through the challenges that come with professional competition.

For parents

For parents of young riders.

Most young riders get here because a parent has carried the load: the travel, the bills and the big decisions. This is how I work with families.

You’re part of it

For riders under 18, a parent or guardian sends the enquiry, agrees to the program and is kept in the loop on how it’s going.

A read on the pathway

Which class, which series and when to step up are big calls. I’ve managed my own career from the start, and I can give you a straight view on the next step.

Alongside your people

Already have a riding coach or a team? I work alongside them, not in place of them. They want to win too.

Nobody can promise results in racing. What I can do is help take the guesswork out of the preparation.

About Troy

Experience you can’t learn from a textbook.

Troy Herfoss has spent more than two decades competing at the highest levels of motorcycle racing in Australia and internationally.

His career has included three Australian Superbike Championships, international competition and championship success in the United States.

But Troy Herfoss Performance isn’t simply about transferring riding technique.

Years of professional sport have also meant navigating injuries, pressure, championship battles, team environments, physical preparation, sponsors, contracts, setbacks and the constant process of trying to perform at a higher level.

He has managed his own career from the start, handling teams, sponsors and opportunities himself, and has built strong relationships across the industry along the way.

Over many seasons he learned how to work with teams: how to communicate with the people around him, how to navigate different personalities, and how much those relationships influence results on track. It is now one of the areas where riders gain the most from his experience.

He has also stayed in top physical condition throughout, the result of 20 years of planned, structured work on training and nutrition. During his racing career he crossed over into cycling and competed at an elite level.

Troy now works individually with riders to apply those lessons to their own development.

From my own racing

What I’ve learnt.

Your best is good enough

For years I always thought I needed to be better. I didn’t understand that my best was actually good enough.

Race your opponents

I joke that I’m the slowest rider to win every time. I race my opponents, rather than riding as fast as possible every lap and hoping to win.

Control the emotion

The most common mistake I see in fast young riders. When it’s good, their comments are short and relaxed. When it’s bad, they’re often not clear or constructive.

Hope has no place

Hoping you’re fit enough or strong enough already puts doubt in your mind. Choose your preparation, believe in it and stay in your lane.

Practise the race

Don’t just get your laps done. Practise race starts, do lap on, lap off intervals to copy the rush as the flag drops, and learn to be fast on defensive lines.

Goals beyond the result

Set goals so your happiness isn’t judged only on where you finish.

How it works

Individual support. Not an off-the-shelf program.

  1. 01

    Enquire

Tell me about your racing, where you’re currently at and what you’re trying to achieve.

  2. 02

    Assess

I’ll look at your experience, current training, racing program and the areas where you feel you need help.

  3. 03

Build the right level of support

That might be occasional mentoring, an ongoing race mentoring program, training plans, riding analysis or trackside support at tests and race meetings.

  4. 04

    Work together

We establish clear objectives and review them as your season develops.

Trackside mentoring

In your corner at the circuit.

Troy joins you at tests and race meetings as a mentor, working alongside you and your team through the weekend.

  • Weekend and session objectives
  • Trackside observation
  • Debriefs after each session
  • Racecraft and race strategy
  • Pressure and decision-making
  • Working with your team
  • Test planning
  • Review after the event

This is race mentoring for competing racers. It is not riding instruction or track-day tuition.

Ongoing programs

Through the season.

Three programs

From $375 a month

The programs build on each other. Base is purely physical training. Each step up moves further into the psychological demands of racing: handling a race weekend, pressure, and how you work with the people around you.

Physical training

Base

Purely physical. A training plan built around your racing and travel calendar. Your watch linked where possible, so every session is recorded. Fuelling advice for your sessions.

Physical + race weekends

Race

Everything in Base, plus the start of the mental side: a call every fortnight, a plan going into each race weekend and a debrief after it.

Physical + psychological

Mentor

Everything in Race, plus a weekly call to help you navigate the mental challenges of racing, help with your feedback to the crew on race days, and work on interviews and talking to camera.

A normal week on a program

  • Your sessions for the week are set out in your plan: strength, cardio and recovery, built around your riding and travel.
  • You record each session on your watch, so I can see what you actually did.
  • You tell me your travel and race schedule, and the plan moves with it.
  • On Race and Mentor we talk it through on your call, then plan and debrief each race weekend.

Three-month minimum. Base starts at $375 a month. Your program and price are confirmed after an initial enquiry. Trackside days at tests and race meetings are quoted separately.

Questions

Common questions.

What is race mentoring?

Race mentoring is one-on-one support for motorcycle racers that covers more than riding. It takes in racecraft, physical preparation, handling pressure, working with teams and sponsors, and interviews and talking to camera, drawing on Troy Herfoss’s two decades of professional racing.

Who does Troy Herfoss work with?

Motorcycle road racers competing at national and professional level, and developing racers on a pathway to national competition, in Australia and internationally.

Is this riding instruction or track day coaching?

No. Troy Herfoss Performance is race mentoring for competing racers. It is not riding instruction or track-day tuition.

I already have a coach. Can I still work with you?

Yes. I’m not looking to replace your riding coach. I work alongside them, with my focus on guidance, mental preparation, the physical side of racing and choosing the right pathway.

Do you work with riders under 18?

Yes. A parent or guardian sends the enquiry, agrees to the program and is kept in the loop.

Where is Troy Herfoss Performance based?

On the Gold Coast, Queensland. Troy works with riders across Australia and internationally, remotely and at the circuit during tests and race meetings.

How much does it cost?

There are three ongoing programs: Base, Race and Mentor. Base is purely physical training, and each step up adds more on the psychological demands of racing. Base starts at $375 a month, with a three-month minimum. Your program and price are confirmed after an enquiry, and trackside days are quoted separately.
